How to Add Bookmarks in IOS 8

This video will show you how to Add Bookmarks in IOS 8.

Hi All,
I always cringe a bit when I see people that use their iOS device everyday. But still have the same old default Apple, Bing, Google and Yahoo Bookmarks icons in their Safari browser. This also goes for any Mac running OS X Yosemite as the home page on these Mac’s now defaults to a bookmarks screen bringing them inline with their iOS devices.

Mac OS Bookmarks Page

I really don’t like this page as I feel its locking people in. However its here to stay so we may as well work with it.

So the steps to add a Bookmark in iOS is pretty straight forward, all you need to do is go the website you want to add. For the example in the video I used the www.123myit.com website. Once you have browsed to your website. Press the up arrow icon in the middle of the page at the bottom.

iOS Bookmark 1

Once this is done you will see a menu which contains the Add Bookmark, Add to Reading List, Add to Home Screen, Add to Shared Links buttons, press the Add Bookmark button and this will take you to the next screen.

Add Bookmarks in IOS 8

The next screen will have the Bookmark that you want to save, at this stage you can change the heading of the Book mark if you wish. In the video I have removed the “Your complete IT help portal” from the 123myit.com Bookmark. Once you have adjusted the heading simply press save.

Save iOS Bookmark

Once saved the Bookmark will show up every time you start a new Safari browser session.

Apple Frustrations Versioning

This video Apple Frustrations Versioning, is a look at one issue with Apple’s versioning and how it can be problematic when it forces you to upgrade your operating system before you can use certain apps in this case iMovie.

Hi All,
I get a few 123myIT users ask which Operating System I think is better OS X or Windows. Its true I like both, however I do prefer Windows over OS X. And this is mainly because of Apples versioning and the frustrations that can occur when using Apple products. When I say versioning I am talking about OS X, iTunes and iOS versions which I am sure you are all have some experience with at one time or another.
To give you an example where I think Apple’s versioning has gone completely mad and where it can be extremely frustrating for Apple users, recently I wanted to start trying to create one of the 123myIT videos by using Apples iMovie. You can find it on the Apple website here.

iMovie byr Apple

The iMovie software currently retails for $6.49, great! So I logged onto Apple’s App Store and went to buy the software and was greeted by a message which suggested that I need to upgrade my operating System OS X Mavericks to OS X Yosemite before I can install iMovie. This really seems crazy to me because the MacBook Air which I just purchased at the start of this year 2014 with OS X Mavericks install is now out of date.
This coupled with the fact that Mavericks Operating System is only one year old anyway ???
I understand the need to keep software up to date and add functionality and fix bugs and security flaws. But to upgrade the Operating System before you can install an Application seems a bit crazy to me.
Surely they can keep some backward compatibility in mind when it comes to creating their new you beaut software?

After all this I decided to stay keep using what I know and use the free Microsoft Movie Maker. Maybe when I get some more space for recording I will revisit the Apple software but until then I will stick with what I know.

Apple iPhone 6 Plus Unboxing & Firstlook

This video will show you a first look and unboxing of the Apple iPhone 6 Plus mobile phone.

Hi All,
Recently I through it might be a good idea to purchase the iPhone 6 Plus to do a review and unboxing for everyone. Normally I am not such an Apple fan boy, however the part that sold me on the iPhone 6 plus was a few things.
* Greater battery life
* 5.5 inch LED-backlit widescreen Multi‑Touch display with IPS technology
* 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution at 401 ppi

Which is pretty awesome. How comfortable the phone is in your hand when talking on the phone remains to be seen.
Also it make you wonder if Apple plan to kill off the iPad mini with the size of this phone? If is the price difference between the iPad and iPhone will keep it safe.

Apple iPhone 6 Plus

Well of course the iPhone 6 plus is thinner over all, however the camera on the back of the phone does stick out. As for the phone size I do worry about my pocket getting smaller, I carry my phone in my left side pocket and one of the great things about the iPhone 4S was it fits well in small pockets.
The also has been allot said about the iPhone 6 Plus bending, when using the phone I did not notice any type of movement in the chassis of the phone. So if you are a normal user of the phone I wouldn’t worry about this.

iOS 8 Update

This video will show you an iOS 8 Update.

iOS 8

Hi All,
As mentioned in the video above I went to reload the firmware on an iPad mini and iTunes started downloading Apple newly updated iOS 8.
The supported models for the iPhone start at the iPhone 4S and up. The iPad 2’s and up and the iPod 5th generation only.
You can find the direct links for iOS 8 on the links below.
Also before you upgrade you should try and save your signed shsh blobs file. This will allow you to downgrade back to iOS 7 is you so wish.
If you want to check out the Office Apple iOS 8 page you can find it here.

Good luck 🙂
Matt

How to change the lock screen timeout on a Mac

This video will show you how to change the lock screen timeout on a Mac.

So you have setup a password on your Mac, but the annoying thing is the screen times out too fast. You can change the amount of time the Mac takes for the lock screen timeout.

Why does the Screen Timeout on a Mac?

Sleep mode is designed to save battery life and will start after a very short time. When you wake your Mac up from a lock screen timeout you will be prompted for your password.
the good news is you can tell your Mac how long you want this time out to be.

The picture below is of the Security and Privacy settings in your Mac settings.
Security and Privacy

Step 1 – Security and Privacy

If you want to change your time out you will need to go into System Preferences and then Security and Privacy. To change the settings in here you will need the Admin password and this will prompt when you click the Pad Lock icon. Next up enter you Admin password. So where it says Require password immediately, click the drop down menu. And then select a time that’s suitable. Remember you want to try and find a nice balance between annoying and helpful time outs. Also remember that having a time out set for too long will have an effect on your Battery life.

Step 2 – Turn lock screen off

To turn your lock screen off, simply reverse the steps taken above. You will be able to test the time out settings by going to Apple menu and sleep. I hope this helps.

Apple iPad mini 16GB WiFi Unboxing & Firstlook

This video will show you the Apple iPad mini 16GB WiFi Unboxing & Firstlook.

Hi All
I managed to get my hands on a new iPad mini 16GB wifi model. While I don’t use the iPads myself, I did notice that the screen is thumbs touch sensitive, which means its doesn’t detect your thumbs when holding the side of the screen. This seems to me to be a no brainer when you compare that with its competitor the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8 inch.

As mentioned in the video this model retails in the US for $299 & $429 for the cellular model. In Australia for A$349 and A$499 for the cellular model.
