I just bought my first Mac (the Macbook Air 2014 latest version). I am ok with running the OS X. Only one hitch. I have been using MS money for more than 10 years. I want to continue using that software, but its strictly a windows software.
I tried Wine, but the sunset version was not supported. I want to enjoy the Mac experience. What do you suggest ? Bootcamp or Virtual box ? Is there any other alternative ?
Thanks in advance
Hi Navin
Well if you just want to use one bit of software then maybe go for the Virtual box first. Remember you can always uninstall it if you are not happy.
I have used VMware and I have a video on it below.
Install Windows 8.1 on a Mac with VMware
Remember it doesn’t have to be VMware. You should be able to support Windows 7 too.

Matt
thanks. I will try and let you know
I did install windows 8.1 using virtual box. Installation was smooth. Required software works . All fine. OSX mouse gestures work fine. The swipping between OSes rocks !! Thanks
HI Navin
Do you have a website of the Vbox ?

Boot camp for macair 2014
Hi Navin,
I’m having trouble with this. I have an Apple Macbook Air (13inch mid 2012) and I’m trying to install Windows 8.1 Pro. I downloaded the copy I purchased from the Microsoft site (I’m a student), converted the .exe to an .iso file, went through your steps and it’s not working for me. I get to the screen where it’s creating the file and it just says “Your bootable USB drive could not be created.” I’ve even tried to download your free 8.1 Blue version and that doesn’t work.
I think the problem is the Bootcamp version because I have (Version 5.1.2) and your link says I need ( 5.1.5621). I just can’t figure out how to update mine. I’ve downloaded that version but no luck. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
HI Joe

I purchased Windows 8 through the Microsoft site with a student discount (I am in College), with the intention of installing it on my Macbook Air (2014). I was hoping the download file would be an ISO, but it turns out to be an EXE file. Do I have any options for converting the EXE somehow? I obviously cannot run a Windows executable on a Mac without some kind of fancy software. What about just downloading your Windows 8 download, since I have a product key for my purchase. I have access to a Windows 7 machine in case it is need (unfortunately lost the CD for that system). Any suggestions from anybody?
Hi Michael McNamara
Try watching this video.
Create USB installation media for Windows 8.1 https://www.123myit.com/2014/11/create-usb-installation-media-windows-8-1/
This should allow you to download the iso file. However I am not sure if it will work with your Student product key. Please let me know if this works for you because I would like to know.

Hi. I recently purchased Windows 8.1 from Microsoft’s site, with a student discount. My intention was to download and install it on my MacBook Air (2014). However, I have now discovered the file is a Windows executable (EXE) instead of an ISO. I do have access to a Windows 7 machine (unfortunately lost the disk for that system) but I don’t know what help that would be. Any suggestions on how I can use the download? Should I just download your Windows 8 file and use my product key? Thanks.

Hey Matt
I followed the video instructions, and managed to reach the Windows 8 installation. However, I ran into a problem. The Windows installer says “Choose an operating system to install” (or something close to that), with an empty box. It says no image file can be found. Maybe I missed a step somewhere. I placed the Windows 8 ISO file on the Mac Desktop, and let BootCamp do the rest. It only failed at this point, and will not let me continue. Any suggestions? I do have a portable USB DVD drive that I bought for my Mac a while back, and a PC with Windows 7 somewhere else. Should I burn the ISO to that drive? Will the installer even recognize it?
Thanks for your help so far.
Michael
HI Michael McNamara
Where did you get the ISO file from? Also try dragging the ISO file into boot camp when it asked for a choose operating system.
Lastly you could try burning the iso file to a DVD and installing that it might also work.
Cheers
Matt
Hey Matt
The ISO file was downloaded from the “Windows 8 Media” program shown in the video you recommended. It was one of two options. The first was the Bootable USB, and the second option an ISO file. I think it was meant as a file to be burned to a bootable DVD. As for dragging the file, I don’t think that is an option. The Windows installer appears using the Boot Camp generated bootable USB. The ISO file is on my Mac Desktop. I have since removed the partial installation with BootCamp, and will try again.
Thanks
Michael
Hi Michael McNamara
So you don’t have an option to hit choose and then select the file? If you move the file to the Document directory can you select it from there?

Hi I successfully installed Windows 8.1/partitioned my Mac and everything went smoothly. However, I cannot get access to internet on Windows whole no problem doing so on OS X. I get a message saying that “Not Connected – No Connections are Available and ‘Did not detect any Networking Hardware’. Can anyone help. I’m presuming it might be a driver issue. Perhaps I missed a step in the Bootcamp set up process or something like that. If it is a driver issue – any idea what drivers I need to d/l and where I might get them.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I am trying to install Windows 8 on a 2014 13inch Air. I bought Windows 8 from a local retailer and created the ISO from the dvd on my iMac desktop. Now when trying to install it on my Air through boot camp it just freezes up and after long time comes up with an error message saying this task can not be completed. I have watched your videos and can not see what i am doing differently.

I had installed windows 8.1 pro preview in my MacBook air 2011 ver. and after a few days later, i bought the product key and tried to activate the key from activation windows page but can’t activate the windows yet. Please help.
HI Shawon Khan
You wont be able to as the version installed is preview. You would have to remove and reinstall Windows version that you purchased.
First step is to create a USB with Windows on it. Check this video out.
Create USB installation media for Windows 8.1
Then once is done remove the boot camp install.

then reinstall the Windows like you already did.
Good luck,

Hi, Are you saying that i have to re-install the windows using boot-camp again? Could you please give me a video link what i will do exactly after REMOVING BOOT CAMP PARTITION?

Hi, as i told you my system is running windows 8.1 PRO preview in my MacBook Air but i bought the win 8.1 key. i still can’t activate the key by creating installation media in a usb flash drive. Doesn’t the win 8.1 key support in pro version?
i have followed all your steps to install window on my macbook air 2015. the key which you provide is not the full version. so i have to activate window. but when i try to activate window(through my windows key which was provided by my school) it say “This key didnt work, please check it and try again or try a different key” help me!!!!!

You got me wrong
I want to change the partition space between windows and Mac OS.
For example
I divided the space by giving 90gb to Mac OS and 30 gb to windows
But now my windows use is much more and i need more space
Therefore i want to divide the space equally between windows and Mac OS
HI shaheer
In this case you are in a spot of bother. You will need to run the boot camp assistant again. Remove the boot camp partition. Restart you Mac and then run the boot camp assistant again. Then reinstall Windows and set the drive at the correct size.
Good luck, let me know how you get on.

Matt
the windows 8 bootcamp is a trial ?
Hi chris, its a preview version. So after one month it will ask you to upgrade. You can keep using it after one month. Also with preview version you cant customise it. So for example you can change the wallpaper etc.
If you think you will use Windows allot anyway. Why not buy a copy there is different flavours to suit everyone.

Hi, Guys. After viewing your YouTube video about installing Windows on a MacBook Air I bought a brand new Mac (sealed from the U.S.) identical to the one in your video – I purchased a 2014 model because I specifically wanted to install Windows 7 on my Mac. I’ve never owned a Mac, but I thought your video looked pretty straight-forward enough. Unfortunately, I went through the process but received an error message – disk could not be partitioned.
I did the whole command + s Single Mode User /sbin/fsck fy thing but still received the same error message – disk could not be partitioned. Like I said, it’s a brand new laptop, straight out of the box, with nothing on the hard drive except what it came with. $2100 later, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 🙂
PS: This is your YouTube video I used as a guide:
Hi Brian
Iam working on a few new videos regarding Windows install on 2015 Mac.
Stay tuned and I will post up the video shortly. Some others have been having this issue so to try and help out I have just got my hands on a 2015 Mac.

Matt
Thanks so much for your reply.
Mine’s actually a 2014 Mac, but any advice on this issue would be welcome. I’ll watch out for your video. I opted for a 2014 Mac, because the 2015 doesn’t support Windows 7 … so I’ve been told, and I particularly wanted W7 on it.
Cheers.
I have a Win10 preview installed on my 2014 Air and I want to uninstall it and get back that extra 120GB as I’m selling my Air. How do I do that? Thank you.

I have a macbook air late 2014 and trying to install windows 7 64bit via bootcamp. I get to the partition part and then the screen goes blank. If i switch it off and then reboot holding down the ALT key i get the mac hd and the windows USB. Whn i select the windows USB it loads and start to load windows, i get to the setup screen for country etc and and can go no further as i ahve no keyboard or mouse even if i plug and external mouse into the USB port.
Has anyone got a solution been at this for 2 weeks now and just no further forward.
Hi Nick
You might need to use a usb mouse and keyboard until you get to set Windows up. Then you can install the boot camp drivers for your model.

Did you burn them to DVD?

How can I run this bootcamp with my Macbook Air Mid-2011 Yosemite ????
Windows 7* SP1 Activated ISO
Hi Hennessy,
Have you tried to use an external USB keyboard and mouse to finish the install?
Cheers
Matt
Hi Matt,
No, I haven’t. I have read something about compatibility of external mouse and keyboard such as the USB Port 2.0 or 3.0. Such as concerned, is standard compatible with my Macbook Air Mid-2011? As far as I know, I’ve reached the installation progress of windows up to the point where my macbook restarts and starts up as windows until they asked me for language to be used for the Windows 7. Then I can’t use my keyboard and trackpad anymore. With what I said, I can say that I am doing the correct procedures, yes?
Hennessy
Just a follow up, you mean I really don’t need to install bootcamp yet? I just need external devices to finish the installation of the Windows then install the bootcamp in the Windows partition?
Can you create a video about installing Windows on a 2015 Mac AIR the has Bootcamp 6.0 please. I have tried several times and it does not seem to work. I have also tried Windows 8.1 and Windows10. No where seems to have a support video and Apple support blame Microsoft installer!!

Should be simular to this video though.

Thanks for the reply and I have viewed the video you shared. The issue seems to be the different behaviour of Bootcamp and not using a USB drive to host the Windows drivers or ISO image.
